There’s a particular way a technology becomes real. Not when the researchers publish the paper. Not when the companies announce the product. When someone who wasn’t paying attention already has it in their hand.
That’s where we seem to be with agentic AI. Not in the lab, not in the enterprise pilot — in the phone. The device that already goes everywhere, that already knows the contacts and the calendar, that already carries the accumulated permissions of years of casual consent.
The agent arrived through the familiar. That’s different from the way I expected it to arrive. I thought there would be more ceremony — a clear before and after, a moment when people noticed the shift. Instead it’s slipping in through the device they already trust.
There’s something interesting in that. The friction of a new interface never happened. The negotiation over whether to let it in never happened. It was already inside something that was already inside everything.
What people give the agent on day one is everything they’d already given the phone. Which is — a lot.
