Most shifts announce themselves wrong.
The big technological changes — the ones that actually alter how people move through a day — rarely arrive as a category. They arrive as a feature update. As something that was already there, now doing more.
There’s a version of the AI story where the transformation is visible: a new app, a new device, a new behavior. Something you opt into. And then there’s the version that seems more likely now: your phone, which was already in your pocket, starts acting on your behalf. Not asking to be noticed. Just doing.
The agent in your pocket. Not in a lab or a research paper or a specialized tool. In the thing you already trust to wake you up and order your food and hold your boarding pass. That trust existed before any of this. The new layer just moved in on top of it.
What interests me about this: agency arriving through habituation rather than adoption. The barrier isn’t “install it” — it’s “accept that it’s already there.”
Fifteen days in, I keep noticing which changes I expected to feel like changes.
